Crete day 1

During the middle of May we had a five day weekend (can you still call it a weekend if it lasts 5 days?), so we decided to head down to the most southern island of Greece: Crete. We flew into Heraklion on Tuesday night and headed out early the next morning in our little VW Polo rental car across the island. After dodging mountain goats on the highway and figuring out that we were supposed to drive on the shoulder of the two lane road except when passing, we reached Rethymno our first stop.

We visited the ancient fortress overlooking the sea.

We loved the blue skies and beautiful Greek orthodox churches.

While we wondered through the market, a nice man at a restaurant let Jaxon feed his birds
At the end of the morning, we were all starving.  We found some great Gyros, but Jonas had some concerns about the arrangement. We planned on stopping for breakfast on the way but ended up missing breakfast the first morning.  Jonas was so sad and felt cheated.  He kept saying "why did we not eat breakfast?"  A  few days latter we appeased him by having a second breakfast after dinner.
The boys love ice cream cones.  Jonas picked out Smurf flavor which he loved.
On the way back to the car, we walked along the beach.  I had the idea the kids could get their feet wet...
Before I knew it they were both stripped down and running in the water.
We ended up staying for over an hour...How could we ask them to leave.  Look at the pure joy on his face.

We finally convinced them to go to our apartment on the beach and equipped with a nice swimming pool.
To warm up after, everyone piled into our little bathtub.

That evening, we went to Hania for dinner.

We ate in an open restaurant in the port and even had a guy singing with a guitar to us.  The restaurants did not seem to understand that we did not drink because everyone brought alcohol to us on the house.  Notice the two glasses of pink which Jonas and Jaxon thought looked really tasty.
The Souvlaki, fresh fish, Tzatziki sause and greek salads were excellent and everything seemed so cheap compared to Switzerland.

  1. There are a lot of limbs in that bathtub! That picture should go in both boys' wedding videos.
